Supplication (dua) is one of the most effective ways of developing the spiritual dimension of a human being. It is the weapon of a believer and a beautiful expression of our utter dependence on Allah. Making dua as a family can be a particularly effective way of asking from Allah in a way that trains our children to do the same. The following two traditions show us that the Ahl al-Bayt (a) would frequently make dua with their families:
• Imam as-Sadiq (a) says, “Whenever a matter who trouble my father [Imam al-Baqir (a)], he would gather the women and children of the family. Then he himself would make dua, and they would say aameen (“may Allah accept it!”).” (Al-Kafi, v. 2 p. 487)
• Another hadith states, “Whenever Imam al-Baqir (a) would intend to travel, he would gather his family at home, and make dua as follows: O Allah, tomorrow I leave myself, my property, my family, and my children in your custody – those who are present and those who are absent. O Allah, protect us and that which concerns us! O Allah, place us in Your company! O Allah, do not take away your blessing from us, and preserve whatever well-being and bounty You have given us!” (Al-Kafi, v. 4 p. 283).
There are many times in the day where we can take some time to make dua as a family. For example, for a few minutes before children go to school (in the car or at home), parents can gather them together and can recite some common surahs and ayatul kursi, altogether or taking turns. They can then say salawaat and pray that
1- The day be one in which they learn new and useful things
2- The day be one in which they and their classmates become better servants of Allah
3- That He hasten the dhuhoor of the Imam of the Time (ajf) and help us to be ready for the dhuhoor
4- That He aid and assist the victims of injustice
5- That He cure the sick
6- That He have mercy on the deceased
They can then conclude with another salawaat.
The words that the Ahlul Bayt (a) used in dua are the best of words to use for ourselves. It is however permissible to use our own words as well. Stating a dua such as the above using simple language can teach our children about the importance of frequently turning to Allah for help. It can also be a reminder of our greater purpose and mission in life, and to not be self-centered.
